Healing with Dialogue after 9/11
Becky Esparza
Orange County, California

Becky brought together diverse faith, ethnic, political, law enforcement and community leaders in Orange County as part of a campaign to heal the wounds caused by the post-9/11 spate of hate crimes targeting innocent American Muslims and Arabs. This campaign included a series of over 120 "Living Room Dialogues" that Becky started, bringing Jews, Christians, Muslims and other diverse communities together in non-threatening, facilitated conversations. Her effort culminated in an "Orange County Together" memorial, which featured multi-ethnic, interfaith and other diverse leaders and was attended by over 2,000 people. She did all this in a volunteer capacity.

Becky grew up in a low-income Hispanic barrio, similar to the one she lives in today. She has never been a person of means, but has always found time to help the less fortunate.

She is a grandmother who volunteers over 20 hours a week to promoting understanding among diverse people and works to eliminate prejudice, intolerance and discrimination to make our community a place where all people feel valued and included.
