On December 6, 2002, 17 year old Kelly Chen and 14 year old Michael Raychel were on the school bus with about 30 other students when Kelly saw the driver have what appeared to be a heart attack. The bus went out of control and rolled into crossing traffic. Kelly alerted co-nominee Michael Raychel and both leapt into action to save the bus from disaster.

Michael managed to stop the bus before it entered a dangerous highway. While Michael got the bus stopped safely, Kelly picked up the bus radio and told the bus dispatcher they needed help. Kelly then calmly described the situation and provided the precise location of the incident so the bus company could send police and ambulance assistance right away.

Their quick thinking saved not only their fellow students, but also the bus driver, who received timely medical assistance that saved his life.
