Volunteering to Make a Difference
Thomas Brehm
Honolulu, Hawaii

Thomas Brehm currently volunteers his time and talents to five different organizations in Hawaii to help our less fortunate and make a positive difference in our society. He joined the Alzheimer's Association as a volunteer, and he has worked hard and tirelessly in the local chapter to address the impact of Alzheimer’s not only on the afflicted, but also on their families. His efforts led to Thomas becoming the president of the board of directors, an office through which he has made great contributions to administration, fundraising, and expanding public awareness of this dreaded disease.

In addition, he volunteers as the chief of staff with the Hawaii Wing Civil Air Patrol and finance officer for the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 18, here in Honolulu. These ventures aid the public in safety, civil defense, emergency services, and youth development and mentoring. He contributes his time and expertise in organizing the Great Hawaiian Air Race, which also supports the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization dedicated to children with life-threatening medical conditions. Somehow he also finds time to volunteer his services as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Recently the Masons and the Shriners have extended invitations to him to join, and he will most surely contribute much to these organizations’ community outreach efforts.

Thomas has led a life dedicated to civic service, and he has already given 26 years of his life to his country as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. After all of this, he continues to give to his country and community, even in the midst of switching careers. He seamlessly reconciles professional life with civic life, engaging in volunteer work with rigor, spirit, and the sheer joy of making a positive difference in the world around him. Thomas completed many of his community-service projects while on reserve status as a pilot flying for a local air carrier, Aloha Airlines. Neither the demands of his pilot’s duties nor the joys of home have ever taken away from Thomas’s ability to lend a helping hand. He gives his all to family, professional, and civic responsibilities, balancing his time seamlessly as well.

A loving husband and doting father, Thomas Brehm continues his volunteer work with no regard or even desire for recognition, and never stops seeking out more ways to help the community. His tireless devotion in helping others truly inspires me, our daughter, and all those who have come to know him. Thomas’s efforts to help others certainly have made our world a better place.
