A little girl sat on the sidelines at her local playground, fighting back tears as she watched the other children. As she grasped the spokes of her wheelchair, she wondered why the playground didn’t provide a place where everyone could play. Several months later, after the heartbreaking death of their nine-month-old son Jonathan from spinal muscular atrophy, Amy Barzach and her husband Peter, sought a meaningful way to honor his memory. Remembering the little girl in the wheelchair, they decided to create a playground where children with and without disabilities could play and learn together.

After that playground opened in 1996, hundreds of people wanted to know how they could build playgrounds for children of all abilities in their communities. Amy gave up a career in the corporate world to start the nonprofit organization, Boundless Playgrounds®. She sought to create barrier-free playgrounds where all children, with and without disabilities, could play and have fun together.

Today, there are more than 100 Boundless™ playgrounds in 21 states and Canada with dozens more in development. Her goal is to create Boundless Playgrounds play environments within reach of every child.

Amy has raised her voice to make a difference for all children. She asks the simple questions, “Shouldn’t playgrounds be for everyone? Why should a child with a disability ever be left out of the fun at a playground?” To this end, she works tirelessly and will not stop until all children have a place to play.“ As the mother of a child with a disability, I've spent my life trying to give my daughter what many other children take for granted: day-to-day joy in life and independence,” said Sandy Greenberg. Amy helps families do just that.
