Samita Mohanasundaram
Nashua, New Hampshire

Play Video

Although not yet old enough to attend high school, Samita Mohanasundaram has already made contributions to the betterment of our world, from helping the impoverished children in India, to volunteering in her own community of Nashua, New Hampshire.

For example, Samita has taught impoverished village children in India; sold Make-A-Wish angels in Nashua, New Hampshire, and donated over 12,000 books to places in need around the world. Samita has also organized a card-signing drive, involving over 1,000 people, to send greeting cards to hurricane-affected areas in Florida. Her efforts included helping to secure and donate over 900 books to these areas. To help fellow students, she started a column in her local newspaper, which gives her peers useful math tips. She performs classical Indian dance as well as piano in retirement and nursing homes, striving not only to help entertain the elderly but also make them feel connected to the larger community. It goes without saying that Samita always encourages people across the world to join community service and help others.

Helping others has always had a place in Samita’s heart ever since her childhood. A genuine self-starter, Samita constantly generates ideas to help others, and she sets an example by doing. This little fourteen-year-old girl has already given over 870 hours to community service, and her projects have helped tens of thousands of people in hurricane stricken Southern states and India. Closer to home, Samita organized, developed, and created a book drive for the Nashua Community. She collected over 12,000 books from family, friends and neighbors for distribution to dentist offices, hospitals, community centers anywhere and everywhere she could encourage little children to read. Samita also sells Make-A-Wish Foundation angels and greeting cards at school fairs, neighbors' yard sales, and anywhere else she can to raise money for children facing life-threatening illnesses.

Samita Mohanasundaram’s heart has always led her to help others. A student who believes the she must do her best for her teachers, classmates, school, and family, Samita goes so far beyond this! She actually helps make our world a better place. And Samita seeks no reward, no recognition, and no accolades for her efforts.

Her willingness to reach out to others when no one else will, and her willingness to see others achieve what they might if they just receive the right encouragement and the real opportunity, shows that a young student today can overcome the world of “gimme, gimme.” Samita’s heart and achievements bring to life a very famous speech many decades ago, for she asks not what the world can do for her, but what she can do for the world!
