Sonia began her involvement in tackling postpartum psychosis when her sister suffered its debilitating effects after the birth of her daughter. In helping her sister through the illness, Sonia learned just how few resources actually existed to help women suffering from postpartum mood disorders. She also learned that many health care professionals and Para-professionals either didn’t recognize the symptoms, or had no place to refer patients for follow-up. In response, Sonia Murdock co-founded the Postpartum Resource Center of New York, Inc. (www.postpartumNY.org
Due to Sonia’s efforts, scores of women have since found support and referrals via the Resource Center. Moreover, Sonia has worked to educate the public, health care professionals, and legislators on the subject, especially in the wake of the Andrea Yates tragedy in Houston, TX. With Sonia's help, the Postpartum Resource Center of NY has committed its resources to the model Maternal Depression Outreach Project, along with other notable agencies. This outreach program includes LI's United Way Success By Six, the National Association of Mothers' Centers, the National Center of the Parent-Child Home Program, and the Marks Family Right From the Start 0 - 3 Center of North Shore Child & Family Guidance
But Sonia’s efforts do not only focus on the impact of postpartum disorders on new mothers. Sonia also works with the children, spouses, and the extended families whom the illness also impacts.
Sonia's work has helped increase the health and safety of women and their children, as well as their quality of life. Sonia's efforts have not only raised the public consciousness about postpartum disorders, but also have helped save lives every day.
